The Nature of the Corporate Income Tax: What is it and who bears the burden?

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to summarize the nature of the corporate income tax and its burden. The initial reasons for the corporate income tax were to offset legal challenges to the individual income tax as well as losing the individual income tax base because of possible U.S. involvement in international conflicts. Proponents of the corporate income tax have used legal justification for the corporate income tax, which contradicts sound economic reasoning. Also proponents have argued that a corporation is a ‘separate financial entity.’ This belief gave proponents comfort to assume that the corporate income tax was a ‘harmless’ tax and therefore, it would stick to the corporation. However, further analysis demonstrated that corporations are not ‘separate financial entities’ but an institution where investors, workers and consumers engaged in trade. Thus, investors, workers and consumers end up bearing the burden of the corporate income tax, where the burden includes out of pocket expenses as well as disturbances in their behavior and preferences. So if there are these costs, are there any winners? Yes, U.S. politicians, tax lawyers and tax accountants, and foreign countries. U.S. politicians profit by increases in tax revenues as well as creating an artificial market where corporations can make financial contributions in exchange for tax advantages. This artificial market causes an artificial demand for tax lawyers and tax accountants to extract these benefits, which end up as costs to investors, workers and consumers. In the international market, U.S. citizens try to offset the burden by purchasing goods from foreign firms as well as investing in foreign firms (including U.S. based companies). Nevertheless, any political responses to these unintended consequences only lead to further tension and costs on U.S. citizens. In conclusion, the corporate income tax is another channel to collect taxes from U.S. citizens, but with the added benefit of making the macroscopic hand of government a bit less conspicuous.

The Corporate Income Tax

In 1909, the purpose of the corporate income tax was a way for the federal government to raise revenues in a response to constitutional challenges of the individual income tax, and the possibility of temporary losing the individual income tax base during times of war. Proponents of the corporate income tax, now and then, argue that the corporation, in itself (investors), is a separate entity from other agents of the market (employees and consumers). This argument assumes that investors lacked or have no control over the nature and the operation of the firm and hence, it was deemed a separate entity. However, there is no empirical evidence to support this assertion. In fact, if one does research on the numerous empirical and theoretical analysis in financial theory, he or she will find that investors do have significant control over the long run direction of the firm. Even if the investors did not have control of a firm, why would they want to invest in that firm and how does it justify that a corporation should be treated as a separated entity? Proponents of the corporate income tax also argue that corporations receive a number of special ‘privileges’ from society. These privileges include limited liability for investors, the ‘freedom’ of retaining earnings, the liquidity of ownership through marketability of shares, perpetual life of the corporation and the possibility of incorporated mergers and other affiliations. According to proponents of the corporate income tax, incorporated businesses would not have been able to grow without these ‘privileges.’ Yet there is no empirical evidence to support this assertion.

In fact, the nature of these ‘privileges’ is not of natural benefits. Regarding retention of earnings, several federal and local laws require people that are engaged in a sole proprietary or partnership to distribute earnings to its owners. There was no choice in that matter. Regarding perpetual life, the federal government assumed that ‘small’ businesses will dissolve when the owner(s) wishes to retire and that there is no willing buyer of that firm. More so, various laws had made it difficult for ‘small’ business owners to engage in trade of ownership. Hence, the owner(s) had the incentive to dissolve the business and to sell the company’s physical assets, rather than selling the business as a whole. Therefore, it was deemed that ‘small’ businesses had no perpetual life because legal mandates made the sale of a business difficult and unmarketable. In addition, because it was so hard for ‘small’ businesses to engage in the trade of ownership due to federal and state laws, it was not easy for ‘small’ businesses to merge together. So these ‘privileges’ were not privileges at all. Corporations just did not have to face the same legal restrictions as small businesses. Today, these restrictions on non-incorporated business are prevalent in federal and state laws, especially in the tax code. The only true privilege that a corporation receives is limited liability. Nevertheless, the corporate income tax is not structured in a way to retain a fee for such ‘privileges.’

Finally, proponents have argued that a corporate income tax is needed in order to safeguard the integrity of the individual income tax. They argue that if there was not a corporate income tax, people would shelter their income from taxation by retaining their share of earnings within the corporation. This assumes that people do not work, consume goods or enjoy leisure activities. In addition, changes in asset values are taxed again as capital gains. What is more striking is that proponents’ final argument relaxes the assumption that the corporation is a separate entity since, “people will have the incentive to avoid taxes by retaining his or her income within the corporation.” So who are these people and what do they have to do with a corporation? These people are investors, employees, and consumers that make up the corporation and hence, it is not a separate economic entity, but a system of trade and exchanges that processes and converts materials, intelligence and information into a demanded product or service. Given that the corporation is not a separate entity, if there is a corporate income tax, who pays for? Initially, the federal government viewed the corporate income tax as a ‘fly paper’ public policy. In the sense, that if the government places a tax on the corporations, the corporations will bear the full burden of the tax. Therefore, it is harmless. However, corporations are not machines that randomly produce goods and services. Thus, it is the agents that make up the corporation, end up bearing the burden of the corporate income tax. The agents that will bear most of the burden of the corporate income tax will be the ones that are most unresponsive to the tax. Therefore, investors, workers and consumers all bear the burden of the tax. So it is necessary to explore how these agents will respond to a corporate income tax.

Effects on Investment and Physical Capital Markets

One problem with the corporate income tax code, it does not consider the substance of true economic profits, financial profits less the opportunity cost of the second best investment decision. Joseph Stiglitz showed that under certain assumptions, if a corporation is allowed to deduct interest payments, a tax on the corporation’s financial profits is the same as a tax on the corporation’s economic profit (Stiglitz 1973). Therefore, the corporate income tax is a tax on economic profits and the burden is fully borne on the investors. But Stiglitz’s model has a fatal assumption, the corporation finances all projects by borrowing and simultaneously gives all profits to the investors. Finance theory states that firms will only borrow if the transaction cost of retaining earnings and issuing stock exceeds the cost of debt.

Under the assumptions of perfect competition and profit maximizing behavior, it was empirically shown that investors bear the burden of the corporate income tax (Harberger 1974). However, the real world rarely operates in perfectly competitive markets and the Harberger study did not account for tax strategies over time. Therefore, there are wider implications for efficient allocation of resources and excess burden. Jorgenson and Yun estimated that for every dollar increase in the corporate income tax, the excess burden is about 45 cents (Jorgenson and Yun 1991).

Initially, a tax on corporations causes a shift in investments from corporations until the after-tax rates of returns are equalize through out the economy. This outward flux from corporate investments depresses non-corporate rates of return. In other words, after the rate of return (percentage of net profits to initial investment) decreases, investors choose to invest elsewhere. This in turns has an effect on managers’ decision to purchase physical capital. As the cost of capital increases (because of after-tax dollars are being invested), corporations will invest in less capital-intensive opportunities (Jorgenson 1963). This is very prevalent when the corporate income tax is graduated. Firms are more likely to invest in physical assets that have generous depreciation allowances. The 1986 Tax Reform act neutralized the graduated corporate income tax effect regarding physical assets and resulted in less distortion between assets than prior generous allowances permitted (Gravelle 1994) and (Goulder and Thalmann 1993). However, the Clinton tax Act reversed this asset neutral policy. So in order to offset the initial distortion on physical capital, Clinton proposed another distortion by trying to reinstate the investment tax credit. However, various models have shown that this proposal will have little effect on offsetting the initial distortion, let alone causing more distortions (Chirinko 1993). Even with the various allowances for depreciation, these allowances do not reflect the economic reality of the underlying assets and will distort economic decision making (Andrews 1993).

Another way in which the corporate income tax distorts decision making is the decision about how the managers will finance projects. There is a positively correlated relationship between such cash flows and investment decisions (Fazzari, Hubbard and Petersen 1988). As mentioned earlier, when managers invest in additional ventures and projects with internal sources, they are using the prior period’s after-tax funds. Therefore, the corporate income tax makes internal funding very expensive and less attractive. However, since interest payments are deductible, the cost of financing through debt is more attractive. This is very problematic because managers have better knowledge of the corporation’s projects and ventures outcomes then the lenders of debt do (Fama and Miller 1972). So the corporate income tax forces the corporation to pay the additional premium to the lender’s with asymmetric information. Also, if one does research on the provision that corporations can deduct interest rates, not far behind was the provision that corporations could not deduct dividend payments. The lack of deducting dividend payments makes debt financing even more attractive (Poterba and Summers 1985). Therefore, the corporate income tax causes a redistribution effect from corporate investors to lenders of debt. Managers are keen to this redistribution effect. According to the Economic Report of the President 1994, 60 percent of after-tax corporate profits were paid out as dividends. The reason is that corporations rather see the profits go to their investors than their lenders, even though it is a costly choice.

The above analysis assumed that the corporate income tax is placed on corporations in a closed economy. A good example of a ‘local’ open macro-economy is trade between states. Many states’ corporate income tax base reflects the federal corporate income tax base. However, there is a lot of leverage in the amount assessed on the corporation, especially with ‘enterprise zone’ subsidies. This raises some interesting questions. How much will the citizens of other states bear the burden of the home state corporate income tax policy? For the burden that is not exported, how does the distribution of the burden fall on the residents of the home state? Variation in state corporate income tax rates across state lines gives evidence of corporate enticing by the state governments (McLure 1981).

When this ‘local’ macro-economy is extrapolated to the multi-national level, developing nations set up their tax structure to legally help U.S. corporations avoid taxes. According to the 1993 Internal Revenue Service Report, the I.R.S. had taken measures to limit these savings but, it has had little effect because of the cost of monitoring. So in an open economy, the rate of return is determined in the international market place. It was empirically shown that for countries that do export capital, they are very responsive to changes in the importing host country’s tax laws (Feldstein and Hartman 1979). Therefore, in the international setting, the corporate income tax causes a redistribution effect from domestic investments to investments in foreign ventures as well as giving U.S. corporations the incentive to expand abroad rather than domestically.

It is rather bold and unfounded to assume that corporations are some self-sustaining institution (investors) separate from employees, and consumers. Given the prior assumption, a ‘fly paper’ notion about the effects of the corporate income tax made the corporate income tax seem as a ‘no lose’ tax policy. Yet, there are real distortions in the investment markets. The corporate income tax causes a flow of capital from the corporate sector to the non-corporate sector. The same tax policy also makes the cost of retaining earnings for future projects very costly and therefore, it influences the type of projects management undergoes and how management will finance them. In addition, the corporate income tax does not allow corporations to deduct dividend payments from income. This furthers the redistribution effect from corporations to banks. However, the system becomes more complex because of the corporation’s ability to strategically pick states and nations to legally avoid paying taxes. Therefore, it is not good public policy to assume that a corporate income tax will ‘stick,’ because not only will investors and managers change their behavior, but so will workers and consumers.

Effects on Labor Markets For a given market, when the labor supply is tight, workers end up bearing a major portion of the corporate income tax (Harberger 1983). When workers face part of the burden of the corporate income tax, their response is the same as if it was an income tax. However, the way workers respond is not clear (Break 1957). There are two effects that result from the workers’ share of the corporate income tax burden. The first effect is that the burden makes the opportunity cost of engaging in leisure activities cheaper (Roberts 1981). Since the worker is making less per hour, he or she is forgoing less income by being involved in leisure activities. The second effect is that a tax on wages makes a person want to work more. Since the worker is making less per hour due to taxes, he or she wants to make up for the loss in income by working more hours. Which effect is more dominant? It depends on the individual’s chosen preferences and circumstances (Hemming 1980). The first effect is more dominant for those who prefer leisure activities than spending income on goods. The second effect is more dominant for those who prefer to spend earnings on goods than to engage in leisure activities. These preferences can change over time. Nevertheless, it cannot definitely be said, that workers will work less or more. The effect is ambiguous, but the worker’s burden of the corporate income tax distorts the workers’ behavior. Ingemar Hansson and Charles Stuart did a wage response study on married working women and found that married working women were very responsive to changes (including tax increases/decreases) in their net wages (Hansson and Stuart 1985).

In modern times, compensation packages include more than just wages, but other benefits as well. There are fringe benefits such as health insurance and services, employee gyms, etc. This is where the corporate income tax parts with the individual income tax effects. Under an income tax structure, the higher the marginal income tax the more attractive non-taxed fringe benefits become (Hammermesh and Woodbury). However, when workers bear some of the burden of the corporate income tax, that burden not only affects wages and hours demanded, but it affects the amount of fringe benefits as well. In fact, such benefits maybe hit much harder than decreases in hours demanded and the related wage rate. The reason is, most fringe benefits are uniformly dispersed, unlike wages. In addition, changes in hours and wages for all employees are highly visible and there would be a more negative response to monetary compensation (Feldstein 1993). For example, a vice president relatively requires the same amount of health services as an entry-level worker. So it would be easier for corporations to implicitly decrease such benefits as health care, childcare, etc. Therefore, fringe benefits would not escape negative adjustments and hence, it would increase the workers’ effective tax rate on compensation (See Laffer 1979 of effective tax rates).

The burden of the corporate income tax on workers is the same as if it was an income tax. Given a worker’s preference, they may choose to work more or less hours. The main difference between the effects of the corporate income tax and the individual income tax is that the corporate income tax burden can be extracted out of worker’s benefits, in addition to wage/bonus stagnation and reduction in hours demanded. There is one more market that needs consideration, the consumer market. However, analyzing the corporate income tax effect on the consumer market will reveal the link between the consumer, labor and investment markets.

Effects on Consumer Markets

The consumers’ burden of the corporate income tax is equivalent to a commodity tax. Hence, it not only affects consumption, but work preferences and savings. As consumers bear more of the burden of the corporate income tax, they will choose to buy less goods and services from corporations and more from non-incorporated businesses, because commodity prices in the corporate sector will have risen. Again, the corporate income tax becomes an implicit redistribution policy from incorporated companies to non-incorporated companies. However, this heavily depends on how easily consumers can substitute purchases in the non-incorporated sector from companies in the incorporated sector. This consumer response is weaker under the assumption of a closed economy.

In an open economy, the price is set in the international market. This means that the consumers’ burden of the corporate income tax makes international goods and services from abroad more affordable. So at the international level, the corporate income tax becomes another implicit redistribution policy from domestic corporations to foreign businesses. Temporarily not taking savings into account, the consumers’ working habits change because goods and services are now more expensive and therefore require more income. Since consumers are paying more for goods and services, the consumers’ burden of the corporate income tax makes the opportunity cost of engaging in leisure activities cheaper. If the consumer’s chosen circumstances and preferences favors purchases, the person will want to work more in order to make up for the price increases. The consumers’ burden of the corporate income tax not only effects cross-sectional decisions between the amount of work and present purchases, but also intertemporal behavior such as savings, because savings is just income set aside for future purchases.

There are three reasons for savings, bequest reasons (to make income transfers to other generations), precautionary reasons (the need to make purchases due to unexpected events) and life-cycle reasons (future purchases). The life cycle reason, the dominant reason, is to save income for future purchases because the consumer’s income will start to decline after some future period (Modigliani 1986) and (King 1993). Thus, the consumer will set aside income for future purchases by investing (Friedman 1957).

The corporate income tax burden on the rate of return exactly acts as a capital gains tax. In the process of maximizing his or her future income by investing, he or she will seek investments with the highest after–tax rates of return. The burden on the rates of return makes the opportunity cost on current purchases of goods and services cheaper than future purchases because the consumer is not getting as much income from investments. If the burden on the rate of return is less than on goods and services, and job compensation, then the person will choose to save more. If the burden on the rate of return is greater than on goods and services, and job compensation, then the person will choose to save less. Either way, it makes it harder for consumers to achieve future spending goals. A study in 1978 showed that such effects had a negative impact on savings (Boskin 1978). Again, this analysis assumes savings in a closed economy.

In an open economy, the rate of return is set in the global market. This means that the consumers’ burden of the corporate income tax makes investments in international capital ventures more profitable. So consumers will seek investments in international firms as well as U.S. firms that are internationally expanding to obtain a tax advantage. Thus, the corporate income tax will have little or no impact on the net rate of return (Hausman and Poterba 1978) and (Bovenberg 1989). Once again at the international level, the corporate income tax becomes another implicit redistribution policy by causing a disincentive for consumers to invest in domestic capital ventures and an incentive to invest in foreign capital ventures (Frankal 1992). So the question, “Who bears the burden of the corporate income tax?” becomes clear.

Conclusion

In the light of a corporate income tax, American citizens end up bearing the burden, because investors, workers and consumers are the same persons. How much he or she chooses to engage (domestically and internationally) in the investment, labor and consumer markets is based on their preferences and the corporate income tax has significant influence on those decisions. So he or she is faced with the questions, how and at what magnitude will the burden of the corporate income tax be distributed amongst goods and services, job compensation and rates of return on investments? Therefore, the person will either choose to lightly engage or not to engage in markets where the corporate income tax will have the greatest impact and shift to markets where the impact is smallest. So it is not the question, “Who bears the burden of the corporate income tax?” It is the question, who benefits? The answer to this question can now summarize the true nature of the corporate income tax.

The three groups that benefit the most from the corporate income tax are the federal government, tax lawyers and tax accountants, and foreign countries. It is obvious that the federal government, as a whole, benefits from the revenues of the corporate income tax. However, the importance of the corporate income tax has greatly diminished, because in 1998, revenues generated from the corporate income tax were 188.7 billion dollars or 10.45 percent of the total tax revenues collected. Given such a small contribution to tax revenues as well as the true burden of corporate income tax, why sustain a corporate income tax at all? The reason is simple. The corporate income tax has a profound effect on corporations’ bottom lines. During the time of the Clinton Tax Act, the effective corporate income tax rate was around 38.5 percent (Jorgenson 1993). For firms that cannot expand abroad to gain a long-term tax advantage, these corporations will chose to invest company resources in rent seeking activities. Rent seeking is a way that institutions, including corporations, can influence public policy to gain certain benefits. Corporations will supply politicians, regardless of party lines, with campaign contributions in order to gain tax benefits. One should not get angry with corporations for financially contributing to political campaigns because where there is a supply, there must be a demand. This demand only comes from politicians, because politicians can control corporate campaign contributions by tinkering with the corporate income tax code. So the ‘knee-jerk’ reaction would be, “Limit or stop campaign contributions!!!” But why would politicians pass laws that would significantly limit a major financial lifeline for their political campaigns? In addition to these political gains, the demand for tax accountants and tax lawyers is artificially increased due to the vagueness and complexity of the ever so changing corporate income tax. Thus, the corporate income tax becomes a ‘bait, hook and release’ policy so that politician can extract benefits from American citizens through corporations (Boulding 1953).

Since rates of returns and prices are determined in the international market, foreign countries stand to gain substantially from the United States’ corporate income tax. The corporate income tax causes capital-investments shift from domestic investments to investments in foreign ventures as well as creating an incentive for U.S. corporations to grow in foreign countries rather than investing domestically. Since the after-tax cost of internal funds drops in foreign countries, the cost of investing in foreign physical capital and workers goes down. Therefore, it increases the demand for foreign physical capital and labor markets, which then implies lower prices for consumers and increase returns for investors. Once again, this causes another ‘knee-jerk reaction,’ “Create tariffs and raise the current ones!!!” This reaction has several fatal flaws. It assumes that expanding U.S. corporations in foreign countries and foreign companies are solely selling to U.S. consumers. When they are most likely, selling to other countries. Even if they were solely selling to U.S. consumers, the tariff on these imported goods and services will not ‘stick’ to the companies that are selling the imported goods and services. Investors, workers and consumers will bear the burden of the tariff as if it was a corporate income tax. So the next ‘knee-jerk’ reaction is, “The U.S. needs to coordinate international corporate income tax policy with other countries to stop this ‘outflow’ of commerce!!!” Why would other countries want to voluntarily damper their growth by instigating a corporate income tax in order to help U.S. politicians? Therefore, the corporate income tax will continue to contribute to the unintended consequences of the United States’ investment and trade deficits. So why is there not a public outcry to get rid of the corporate income tax? It is simple, the benefits are concentrated (U.S. politicians, tax lawyers and tax accountants, and foreign countries) while costs are dispersed amongst the U.S. population. Thus, the phenomenon of the corporate income tax has made the visible hand of the government, less visible. In the process of using the corporate income tax law to extract political benefits, the changes in corporate income tax policy cause a ‘puddy in the hand’ effect. The more the U.S. government continues to squeeze political benefits out of the corporate income tax, the more U.S. citizens will continue to purchase goods and services from abroad, as well as investing in foreign firms and in U.S. firms that grow abroad rather than in the U.S.

Finally, we get to what I suspect most of the uproar is about. In several segments, we see Todd Richard Lewis as Steve Urban (get it?), "The Bum Hunter." The Bum Hunter's shtick is to sneak up on a sleeping homeless man - muttering in an Aussie accent about what a "fine specimen" he's found - tie the man's legs and hands together, mark him (either with a marker or spray paint), then "release the subject back into the wild." This might be humorous if the men involved weren't all obviously completely unsuspecting, but most of them wake up in varying stages of confusion or fear at the sight of a strangely dressed man writing on their faces with a Sharpie while camera lights shine in the background. Some of them even fight back. The exploits of the Bum Hunter, however, are strictly reserved for those among you who liked playing frog baseball and picking on the retarded kids in school. The creators' assertions that all parties involved gave their consent rings a tad hollow when you realize the guys set upon by the Bum Hunter couldn't have signed anything until *after* they'd been terrorized by this jagoff in a Boonie hat. So laugh it up when "Steve Urban" duct tapes some bewildered hobo's mouth shut. Crikey!

The Truth...

Every time we see the pro-choice/pro-life debate come into the political arena, the public is bombarded with ill-founded assertions and at best, statements of contradiction. However, the “issues” are more of philosophical paradigms rather than well thought-out propositions. One issue that should catch the public’s interest is the “issue” about whether or not to the government should subsidize reproductive choices. I agree that no level or branch of government should pay for abortion services. I say this not for reasons related to religion or political ideology, but because society should not subsidize a personal choice, in this case, the choice not to have children. Abortion is a method to exercise this choice. It should be free of restriction, but not subsidized. Nevertheless, the government feels the need to subsidize the other possibility of this reproductive choice, childbearing, through child dependency tax exemption(s), child tax credit(s), welfare payments, and the plethora of direct and indirect public financial instruments of education. These various political mechanisms try to alleviate the financial burden of raising children. But why? Having a child is a reproductive choice that must be carefully weighed based on the ability of the parent(s) to provide resources and to mentor each child for several years. However, this decision is distorted by the various public financial incentives to have children, partially paid by those who choose not to have children. Whether it is a welfare payment, a tax credit, the cost of public education etc., these factors have made the decision of having a child from a choice to a “right” that the government should be more than ready to finance. Yet, society does not analyze the recursive effects of subsidizing procreation, such as overcrowded schools, the increasing cost of education, child abuse and neglect, crime and more generally, the long-term problem of over-consumed scarce resources. These problems and many other problems are easily traceable to distorted population growth. The lasting effects of these population problems are far harsher on society and the individual, than the subsidies of abortion services. For some irrational reason, pro-life groups feel that government (society) should spare no cost when promoting childbirth. The substance and structure of having a child is a reproductive choice that should not be contorted by various incentives produced by public policy. Hence, there is a strong argument not to publicly fund abortion services, but pro-life political coalitions should be careful in walking in their neighbor’s yard by rethinking how government subsidizes their choice and their cohorts’ choice to have children. Thus, the regime tries to achieve a different end by the same means. Rather than taking a side, the government should eradicate all public policies that influence reproductive choices.

Rick,

You watch too much of the Oxygen and Lifetime channels. Face it, she is washed up. She has given the finger to her fan base from the 80's and her last album was a result of a mid-life/idenity crisis. In fact, in many of those songs, she thinks she black! First it was Eminem, now this! Sheesh! Hopefully when she swings by LA, again, the sparsness of the stands will give her a clue. Well, if you want to find out about Prabhat Rajan's project go to www.zazona.com and get the FACTS.

Jed, What is so great about Natalie is that she brings millions of us great pleasure through her music. She is also a warm caring human being. That cares deeply for about many causes for humanity. Your comment about her looks was so shallow it’s almost not worth a response. However I no I am not alone in thinking she is one of the most beautiful woman I have ever seen. Jed I am posting this response not to provoke you. And I am not judging you or your opinion. Just like posts I have seen before yours. I wonder why you choose this type of forum to express it.

Prabhat Rajan You are so right these times we live in are very unstable. As we search for answers in the wake of horrific events such as 9/11. I am reminded of all the other injustices around us in many different forms. Our plights may seem overwhelming and unrecognized by the masses. We struggle and cry out felling our pleas have gone unnoticed and unheard. I believe that when good people unite though our voices can become loud enough to be heard around the world and what appear to be insurmountable odds can become very real and attainable goals. Can you please tell us a little more about your cause? I would very much like to help too If I can. Even if it is only in creating an awareness for your cause. Sincerely Rick :)

Uh, Rick: You assume and wrongly that the supermarket plays that obnoxious song "often." It's part of a "canned" package of songs from the corporate office that is occasionally played. That particular package contains lesser-known songs. I've spoken with several employees at the store and they also hate that song with a passion and for good reason.

As for the comment that Natalie Merchant is just a third rate Alanais Morrisette. First of all her name is spelled Alanis Morissette. And secondly Natalie Merchant was fronting a band when Alanis was still in pigtails on Nickelodeon. I have a great respect for both women. Implying that Natalie is third rate Alanis is preposterous. They are both very unique and very talented in there own ways.

Hi, I posted a little while ago about Natalie’s concert June 23rd at Auto west Amphitheater. I mentioned that Natalie did not play any 10,000 Maniacs songs. I was Wrong. I am only finding this out now and I am sorry for the misinformation. I started listening to Natalie a few years back around the time Ophelia came out. I remember thinking “Wow this woman is so cool.” I wish at the time that I had investigated her music further. At the time I did not know of 10,000 maniacs. Awhile later I bought a video called “10,000 Maniacs Time Capsule. When I watched it her energy and beauty took me to a place I did not know existed. At the risk of sounding like an obsessed fan I fell in love with her then.. Know one had ever touched me so deep inside before. The power of her songs on that tape was overwhelming. I remember looking at the dates they showed before each video and thinking where was I back then? And how could I have not known of her then. When I think about all the years I could have been enjoying her music it made me sad. I have started to buy her Albums now. The ones I never knew existed. And I am still learning her songs. The good thing is that every time I here a new song it is like finding a wonderful hidden treasure. And when I am listening to Natalie no matter what is going on in my life I feel truly happy. And now I thank god everyday for bringing into our lives someone as beautiful talented and special as Natalie.

P.S. I am working on my Natalie collection now so if anyone knows where I can buy any rare recordings of Natalie or even just want to chat about her you can E-Mail me at rickwatkins@hotmail.com

I saw Natalie Sunday the 23rd. She did not play any songs from 10,000 maniacs :( But i have to say it was the best concert i have ever been to. Her preformance was fantastic. I cant even begin to describe how beautiful Natalie looked she had on a long green skirt and a black top and she literaly took my breath away. After the show we saw her on the side of the stage looking at the crowd so i waved to her and she smiled and waved back. That sent chills down my spine. If you have a chance to see her this tour i would highly recomend it. :) Peace Rick

What's happening? I have just recently picked up Donnie's EP, "Excerpts from the Colored Section" and it is the best quality of soul. People should get to know him, I've been an ardent supporter of Donnie's musicianship ever since his Yin Yang days in Atlanta. I'm so excited about him. Can't wait for Donnie's full length to drop. The man’s voice, writing and music is a blessing to the world and himself. Especially those that miss the greats donny, marvin and stevie of yesterday. peace!

Natalie: Realmente me considero un fan tuyo , que habita en Bs. As Argentina. Espero te llegue este mensaje , y tenga alguna respuesta de tu parte. (Perdoná el no escribirlo en inglés , espero alguien te lo traduzca). Conocí tu música hacia fines del año pasado viendo el video de tu cd "In concert". Me parece excelente tu voz , y estoy fascinado con tu tema "My beloved Wife". Tiempo despues conseguí el CD , y pude escucharlo entero. Es muy buena la música que hacés y como la interpretás. Me encantan los temas: "Gun shy" , "Seven Years" y "wonder". Marcelo Balmaceda marcelobalma@hotmail.com marcelo.balmaceda@chediack.com.ar Buenos Aires, Argentina 25/04/2002

Good day to you, Miss Merchant. We met your music through the song "Life is sweet". To us especially this one means a lot. Two weeks ago i got tickets for the concert on 24th of May, paradiso holland. Would you please be so kind to consider to play this one and mention the name of my wife "Corry" ? To her (that also goes for me) this song really is a safe and comforting harbour during difficult times like the pain of loss and disorientation of which path to follow in each own future life-line. Mentioning and playing would really mean a lot to us. Would you plaese consider ? Looking forward to see and hear you play your wonderfull music we greet you from holland, Corry and Stephan, leiderdorp

Natalie, I am touched by your sound, so much so that I went to see you in St Petersburg, FL. just to hear you live. Since that time I have become captivated by your movement and voice. I feel strange and at 37 years old, a little embarrassed telling you this, but I have spent way too much time learning more about you and listening to your music. I have turned several close friends on to your music and they, of course, love it. I don't know why I felt compelled to write you, but I do feel somehow connected to you. Not in a stalker kind of way, rather, in a way of understanding and seeing things from a different point of view. I don't know what you believe, about destiny (heavy word) or unique connections with certain people and I'm quite sure you may never see this, but it's the only way I have to tell you Thanks for making my life a little better. I'm sure you are the kind of person that would fit right into my group of friends. So the next time you are in Florida and just want to hang out on the water for a while, let me know. I've thought so many times of what I would like to say to you. But now I'm at a loss. I love your music. I have for many years. Ophelia, especially, touches me. My daughter, Angenette Mae, who is only eighteen months old, also loves your music. She demands to hear "La La" (Thank You) countless times each and every day! Without sounding absolutely ridiculous, I would like to thank you for your works. Truely, your music has helped me through many difficult times in my life. I recommend it to every woman I know seeking strength. I hope to someday meet you and tell you this in person. But, if not, please know that your work has touched my life, Angenette's life, and, I'm sure, many others. Thank you, Jeanette Monteith

Hi Natalie,

Sorry about that, I was typing too fast, so I saw type-errors.

Do you remember when you played with 10,000 Mainiacs in Venlo (Netherlands) back in the early days? Well, you should visit this city again and maybe you like to sing a few songs in the recordshop called Sounds, it,s really great and there,s a stage now where bands can perform.

Best wishes,

Marcel.

I saw Natalie's concert at the Capitol theatre in Sydney last night (31 January 2002) and was disappointed that Natalie did not have the courtesy to introduce her band. (except for one of the guitarists). I was surprised that Natalie, who is so sensitive on a global scale, could be so inconsiderate at this very basic level.

I went to a recent Natalie Merchant concert and she was so mean to the audience! She was so cold and bitter it wasn't even funny. Her performance and her voice were beautiful and flawless, but I really think Natalie needs an attitude change. She is 38 now but she is acting like a 15-year-old.

Hi guys! Being Natalie Merchant fans- actually fans of any music - will help you understand how important it was and is for Americans and musicians to support the US. Remember the telethon that was live on TV right after 9/11? It was 2 hours of some of the biggest artists performing for America. It was called America: Tribute to Heros. I thought I'd share some of the songs with you. There will be a cd available on 12.4 if you wanted to own your own copy and, at the same time, donate to a good cause. All the proceeds go to the United Way.

Enjoy the clips! Peace

I think Natalie's concerts are 2 hours and the only 10,000 Maniacs song I know of that she's playing on this tour is These Are Days. As much as I love that song, I really wish she'd play another Maniacs song!

Dear Natalie Merchant,

Music helps to heal the soul. Your music helps to heal many souls. The reason I am writing to you is that a very dear friend of mine has a soul that needs healing. Mary Farino is an unbelievably strong woman that has been married for fifteen years to a mountain of a man, a true inspiration to all men, to all people. His name is Tom. Tom sings to Mary “Beloved Wife” as one way to let her know how much he loves and adores her. I must now inform you, with unbelievable grief, that as a result of the tragic September 11th events in New York City, Captain Thomas Farino of the FDNY will never have the opportunity to sing to Mary again. Mary and Tom greatly appreciate your music and in an effort to assist her healing I have purchased two tickets for her to attend your November 8th performance at the Beacon Theatre. I know that she may cry, but I can only imagine how hearing you sing this beautiful song on that night will make her remember the great love she shares with Tom.

I understand that you may not be able to play this song that night; I appreciate you taking the time to read this letter.

Best wishes and God bless,

Frank Sparacino (Friend of Mary and Tom) frank_sparacino@hotmail.com
